Artist Statement
Creating within and between photography and sculpture, I dive through the cracks of personal and public. I aim to respond to my experiences with body dysmorphia, anxiety, disease, and paradoxes within each theme that I struggle with; fear and power that live in opposition in my mind, the strength of my body through weakness of my perception of it, and the anticipation of illness that may never exist.
Navigating my material existence in the world, body dysmorphia, from a womanly perspective, is the most significant topic that exposes itself throughout my practice. Molding emotion through creative expression allows me to relate to my audience. In perception, I strive for my viewers to not only find themselves in my art but, to an extent, co-create. With Hiding Inside, my audience becomes aware of their physical presence as they navigate between each hanging print.
Jumping from material to material, I find freedom in my curiosity. Looking towards my work Facing, where I took a cast of my face and made a cake; or Hiding Inside, where I laid my body on fabric and allowed the cyanotype to photograph its present form; I use my body like a paintbrush pressing it against materials, capturing its physicality and my relationship with it. There is power and action with multifaceted materiality, there is power and action in my body, and there is power and action in my art.
